Alpha Psi Lambda National, Inc. Stands United With Latino Students At The University of Lynchburg

Alpha Psi Lambda National, Inc. Stands United With Latino Students At The University of Lynchburg

Alpha Psi Lambda National, Inc. extends its support to our members, the Latino students at the University of Lynchburg, and the greater community affected by recent events. The incident that occurred last week involving students who hosted an on-campus party that enforced culturally insensitive stereotypes is unacceptable. We are concerned to hear from students that this is not an isolated event. While we acknowledge that efforts to educate students on diversity have been made available, we urge the administration to give its students a voice to address these incidents. We applaud Darian Geddis and Laura Arriaza, current Lynchburg Affiliate Chapter President, for opening this dialogue with local media. We call on the community to join its students on their walkout this Wednesday to stand in solidarity and take action.

As members of the Latino community, we call on the University of Lynchburg to increase its efforts to change the culture of the campus and proactively protect students of all identities. Alpha Psi Lambda will continue to advocate for the needs and concerns of the Hispanic/Latino students.

In Solidarity,
The National Executive Board

Alpha Psi Lambda Stands United in Support of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA)

Alpha Psi Lambda Stands United in Support of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA)

In 2012, President Barack Obama announced that undocumented minors who came to the United States as children and meeting specific conditions would be protected against deportation under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. The program allowed eligible people to request deferred action for a period of two years (subject to renewal), granting them a lawful presence in the United States so they could attend school and apply for employment authorization. In 2017, the Trump administration moved to end the DACA program. Immigrant advocates have since presented a legal challenge to allow existing DACA recipients to renew their status. Today, November 12, 2019, the Supreme Court listened to oral arguments to determine if the Trump administration ended the program lawfully. Nearly 800,000 have received work permits and deportation relief through the DACA program. Many of the DACA recipients risked exposing their unauthorized status by submitting the DACA application and now face the possibility that the information they provided could be used to separate them from their families.

Alpha Psi Lambda unequivocally supports our members and those with DACA status and calls on the Supreme Court to preserve the protections against deportation for those in the DACA program. Additionally, we encourage our members to:

Seek support and guidance from trusted and knowledgeable advisors. If you have DACA status, you should consult with your immigration lawyer to learn about your options.

Alpha Psi Lambda responds to Hurricane Harvey

Alpha Psi Lambda National, Inc. extends its thoughts to all those who were impacted by Hurricane Harvey and we extend our deepest sympathies to those who have suffered a tragic loss of life.

The state of Texas was in the direct path as Harvey made landfall, with the city of Houston impacted the greatest. Thousands have been displaced and are actively searching for secured shelter. The City of Houston, with support from Mayor Sylvester Turner, wants to remind residents that immigration status will not be a factor in receiving emergency aid and no one will be turned away at shelters.

Alpha Psi Lambda's Thoughts on Charlottesville

A message from the National Executive Board of Alpha Psi Lambda National Inc.

Alpha Psi Lambda stands against racism, intolerance, and violence. We condemn the acts of bigotry and hatred displayed by white supremacist groups this past weekend at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. Our thoughts are with the victims and communities impacted by these events.

The Fraternity's diverse membership supports its core values of inclusion, equity, justice and friendship and is committed to carrying out these values across their university/college campuses and within their communities.
