Chicago, IL - Alpha Psi Lambda, National Inc. is thrilled to announce a pivotal moment in its history – the creation of its first paid staff position, that of Administrative Assistant. This groundbreaking development represents a pivotal step forward for the Fraternity as it continues to elevate its support for collegiate chapters.

“Today, as we announce the appointment of our first paid position, we reflect on this achievement which symbolizes years of hard work and growth,” announced James Jansen, National President of Alpha Psi Lambda. “This milestone is not just about filling a role, it's about embracing the next stage for us as a national organization."

Lindsey Valenzuela, Northern Illinois University alumna, has been selected to fill the inaugural role. The Administrative Assistant will be responsible for a variety of tasks including updating and maintaining Fraternity documentation, supporting event planning, and bookkeeping.

The position will shift work off the National Executive Board to allow them to focus more on strategic planning, providing support to the collegiate members, and creating a better member experience. The National Executive Board remains dedicated to empowering its members through enhanced support, streamlined operations, and enriched experiences.

Alpha Psi Lambda National, Inc. Statement on Affirmative Action SCOTUS Decision

On June 29, 2023, the Supreme Court ruled that the Affirmative Action admissions program at Havard and University of North Carolina were unconstitutional and in violation of the Fourteenth Amendment’s Equal Protections Clause. This decision overruled the 2003 Supreme Court case Grutter v. Bollinger, which held that the University of Michigan could consider race as a part of their admissions process in order to obtain a more diverse student body. Admissions processes for higher education institutions around the country will be affected as this decision prevents the use of race as a factor in the already complex and robust admissions decision. It will not, however, limit institutions from engaging in outreach, retention, or completion strategies aimed at enrolling and graduating diverse populations.

Just as Justice Sonia Sotomayor pointed out in her dissenting opinion that “increasing the number of students from underrepresented backgrounds who join ‘the ranks of medical professionals’ improves ‘healthcare access and health outcomes in medically underserved communities,’” access to educational opportunities affects more than just the individual student. As a Latino interest Fraternity, Alpha Psi Lambda supports BIPOC students having equal opportunities to obtain degrees at all levels of higher education because of the impact it has on not only the student’s lives, but the lives of their families and communities. As an organization, we will continue to support our members and campus partners in programming aimed at creating support systems and resources for current collegiate members as well as high school students interested in higher education. We also ask our members and chapters to stay informed about how this will impact students in our communities and to host programs centered on diversity, equity, and inclusion. We stand with our collegiate members and the efforts being made to ensure that underrepresented students have access to higher education.

In solidarity,

Alpha Psi Lambda National Inc. Addresses Sexual Assault Reporting
Posted by Michelle Maday on April 30, 2023

For Immediate Release:

April 30, 2023

Contact: James Jansen, National President

Email: president@alphapsilambda.net

Chicago, IL - The National Executive Board of Alpha Psi Lambda National, Inc. has been working the past several months to make improvements in how it responds to and addresses incidents of sexual misconduct and sexual assault. After a recent incident, the impacted chapter brought forth concerns on how it was addressed by the National Executive Board. During a meeting with the chapter, several areas of improvements were identified, along with solutions to address them.

The National Executive Board has taken the following steps to more effectively address these incidents:

  • Revised incident reporting forms to capture information more effectively and provide a better explanation of reporting procedures

  • Empowering chapter executive boards to address the safety of its members through policy updates

  • Disseminating how to address and report incidents of sexual assault and sexual misconduct with chapter leadership

  • Expanded training of National Office volunteers on reporting procedures and addressing incidents of sexual assault

In addition, the Sexual Assault Prevention and Resource (SAPR) Committee, established in 2020, continues to provide programs and resources to prevent and educate our members on sexual assault and provide support to survivors. The National Office also maintains many resources on its website including national and local resources for all chapters: https://www.alphapsilambda.net/sexual-harassment-assault

Additional resources for anyone who is experiencing or has experienced sexual violence:

National Sexual Assault Hotline
Call 1-800-656-4673
Available 24 hours everyday

National Sexual Violence Resource Center
https://www.nsvrc.org

More resource are available on our website:
https://apl.memberclicks.net/sexual-harassment-and-assault

Sexual assault can have significant and long-lasting effects on on all communities and has no place in Alpha Psi Lambda. Some of the potential effects may include:

  • Trust and cohesion: Sexual assault can significantly damage the trust and cohesion within a chapter. Survivors may struggle to trust other members, and members may struggle to trust each other, particularly if they feel that another member was responsible for the assault or failed to report it.

  • Emotional well-being: Survivors of sexual assault may experience a range of emotional responses, including anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). These can impact the member’s ability to fulfill their role within the chapter as well as the member’s academic success as a student.

  • Physical well-being: Sexual assault survivors may experience physical symptoms, such as chronic pain, fatigue, and sleep disturbances. These can impact their ability to participate in chapter activities and maintain their physical health.

  • Performance: Survivors of sexual assault may struggle to perform at their usual level, particularly if the assault occurred within a chapter environment or involved a member. They may also experience difficulties with concentration, focus, and motivation, which can impact their ability to contribute to the chapter.

  • Reputation: Sexual assault within a chapter can also damage the chapter's and overall Fraternity’s reputation and image. This can impact our ability to recruit new members, successfully program on campus, and maintain community support. At the individual level, the survivor may fear for their own reputation and how others may perceive them and treat them after the assault.

It is important for all members to understand the policies and procedures in place to prevent and respond to sexual assault. This includes participating in training to be able to utilize the reporting procedures and access support services for survivors when necessary. Chapters can also work to create a culture of respect and accountability, where sexual assault is not tolerated and survivors are supported.

The National Executive Board is fully committed to addressing sexual assault and providing support to survivors. We take this issue seriously and are actively working to ensure that our members are educated on how to prevent and respond to sexual assault. We also recognize the importance of supporting survivors and are dedicated to providing resources and assistance to help them through their healing process.

Email: president@alphapsilambda.net

On November 5th, 2021 our Fraternity suffered a great loss when our Hermano Franco Patino, was one of eight people who lost their lives during Astroworld’s mass casualty event in Houston, Texas.

The members of Alpha Nu Chapter at the University of Dayton (UD) have been working diligently over the past couple of months in collaboration with the university to create an annual scholarship in our Noble Brothers name.

The National Executive Board and National Foundation of Alpha Psi Lambda are working together to achieve the goal of reaching $20,000. The funds raised would then establish a current-use scholarship in memory of Franco. This scholarship will impact Multi-Ethnic students majoring in engineering at UD, with first consideration given to a student involved in either the Alpha Nu Chapter of Alpha Psi Lambda National, Inc. or UD’s Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE). Selected students will possess many of the strong leadership and service traits personified by Franco, through how he lived and how he loved.

Please consider donating to this cause to ensure our Hermano’s legacy is forever remembered.

Chicago, IL - Our Black and Latinx communities are hurting. Two young people, 13 year old Chicago Public School student Adam Toledo and 20 year old Daunte Wright, a new father, from Minnesota, recently lost their lives. These two avoidable deaths have shaken our community and country once again.

We vehemently stand in support of justice for our young people and people of color. We demand change, action, and education so that everyone is protected by the institutions of our democracy. Our BIPOC community deserves to feel safe.

In continued support of this movement, we have compiled a list of various resources from our peers, members and communities to aid in the commitment to nobility and justice.

For anyone, especially our young adult members, please consider using this resource to provide to any professor or employer. Your mental health is the most important and we all deserve to grieve these young lives lost.
