CHICAGO, IL – This year marks a historic milestone as Alpha Psi Lambda celebrates 40 years since its founding at The Ohio State University. On February 11, 1985, thirteen noble men and women established the first co-educational, Latino-interest fraternity in the United States — one built on unity, leadership, and a deep commitment to cultural awareness and academic excellence.

“It’s inspiring to see members from across generations and the country come together to celebrate 40 years of Alpha Psi Lambda. At a time when our members and the broader Latino community are being targeted and facing growing discrimination, this gathering is a powerful testament to who we are. Our organization has created space, voice, and belonging for Latino students and others on college campuses where they are often underrepresented. Celebrating our legacy isn’t just about looking back—it’s about honoring our identity, recognizing the impact we continue to make, and embracing the vital role we play in shaping a more inclusive and empowered future.” - Michelle Maday, National President, Alpha Psi Lambda National, Inc.

Rooted in the principle of Familia, Alpha Psi Lambda has grown into a national network of chapters and alumni who remain connected by a shared purpose and passion. That vision continues today as we invite members, family, and friends to join us for a weekend-long celebration in Columbus, Ohio, from June 20–22, 2025, reflecting on four decades of achievements and looking ahead to the future of our organization.

Weekend Highlights:

  • Friday, June 20Familia Welcome Event at Gravity Experience Park: An outdoor gathering featuring food trucks, music, and games for all ages.

  • Saturday, June 21National House of Delegates (Members Only) followed by an elegant 40-Year Gala at the Ohio Union, celebrating our journey with dinner, awards, speakers, and dancing.

  • Sunday, June 22Farewell Picnic at Nelson Park: A relaxed closing event full of food, music, and community.

This special celebration was made possible thanks to the dedication of our 40-Year Committee, whose hard work and vision brought this historic weekend to life. We are also deeply grateful to our generous sponsors and donors, whose support allows us to honor our legacy and celebrate our accomplishments.

Chicago, IL – Alpha Psi Lambda National, Inc. stands in solidarity with our members, their families, and the broader communities engaging in peaceful protest in response to recent events in Los Angeles, Chicago, and nationwide. As demonstrations continue, we affirm the fundamental right to protest and advocate for justice, equity, and human dignity.

Recent immigration enforcement actions targeting individuals in Latino communities, particularly in workplaces and public spaces, have contributed to a climate of fear, instability, and uncertainty. These actions are unjust and undermine fundamental rights and freedoms. Their effect on our members, families, and the broader community is harmful and unacceptable.

Alpha Psi Lambda remains committed to standing with those affected.  Our Fraternity remains deeply committed to providing a safe, inclusive, and empowering space for our members to express their beliefs, raise their voices, and support causes that align with our values. We recognize the importance of civic engagement and the power of collective action.

How You Can Stay Safe, Informed, and Empowered:

Exercise Your Right to Protest – Safely
We support the right to peaceful assembly and encourage all members participating in protests to do so safely. Be aware of your surroundings, go with others when possible, and know your rights when engaging with law enforcement.

Know Your Rights
Familiarize yourself with protest and civil rights laws. Access reputable resources and attend “Know Your Rights” trainings. These tools are vital in protecting yourself and others. Information is available on our website's “Supporting Our Communities” page.

Prioritize Your Well-Being
Protesting and witnessing injustice can be emotionally and physically exhausting. Remember to care for your mental health. Seek support from friends, chapter members, or professional counselors. Remember to take breaks from news consumption. Visit our “Mental Health and Wellness” page for resources.

Advocate and Educate
Whether in the streets, on campus, or online, use your voice to uplift marginalized communities and demand change. Share accurate information, promote respectful dialogue, and help connect others to resources.

Know Where to Turn for Help
Legal support can be crucial. If you or someone you know experiences legal issues related to protesting or civil rights, contact organizations specializing in protester support and civil liberties.

Our strength is unity, compassion, and courage in times of unrest. Let us support each other, stand for what is right, and embody the nobility and purpose guiding Alpha Psi Lambda.

On June 29, 2023, the Supreme Court ruled that the Affirmative Action admissions program at Havard and University of North Carolina were unconstitutional and in violation of the Fourteenth Amendment’s Equal Protections Clause. This decision overruled the 2003 Supreme Court case Grutter v. Bollinger, which held that the University of Michigan could consider race as a part of their admissions process in order to obtain a more diverse student body. Admissions processes for higher education institutions around the country will be affected as this decision prevents the use of race as a factor in the already complex and robust admissions decision. It will not, however, limit institutions from engaging in outreach, retention, or completion strategies aimed at enrolling and graduating diverse populations.

Just as Justice Sonia Sotomayor pointed out in her dissenting opinion that “increasing the number of students from underrepresented backgrounds who join ‘the ranks of medical professionals’ improves ‘healthcare access and health outcomes in medically underserved communities,’” access to educational opportunities affects more than just the individual student. As a Latino interest Fraternity, Alpha Psi Lambda supports BIPOC students having equal opportunities to obtain degrees at all levels of higher education because of the impact it has on not only the student’s lives, but the lives of their families and communities. As an organization, we will continue to support our members and campus partners in programming aimed at creating support systems and resources for current collegiate members as well as high school students interested in higher education. We also ask our members and chapters to stay informed about how this will impact students in our communities and to host programs centered on diversity, equity, and inclusion. We stand with our collegiate members and the efforts being made to ensure that underrepresented students have access to higher education.

Alpha Psi Lambda National Inc. Addresses Sexual Assault Reporting
Posted by Michelle Maday on April 30, 2023

For Immediate Release:

April 30, 2023

Contact: James Jansen, National President

Email: president@alphapsilambda.net

Chicago, IL - The National Executive Board of Alpha Psi Lambda National, Inc. has been working the past several months to make improvements in how it responds to and addresses incidents of sexual misconduct and sexual assault. After a recent incident, the impacted chapter brought forth concerns on how it was addressed by the National Executive Board. During a meeting with the chapter, several areas of improvements were identified, along with solutions to address them.

The National Executive Board has taken the following steps to more effectively address these incidents:

  • Revised incident reporting forms to capture information more effectively and provide a better explanation of reporting procedures

  • Empowering chapter executive boards to address the safety of its members through policy updates

  • Disseminating how to address and report incidents of sexual assault and sexual misconduct with chapter leadership

  • Expanded training of National Office volunteers on reporting procedures and addressing incidents of sexual assault

In addition, the Sexual Assault Prevention and Resource (SAPR) Committee, established in 2020, continues to provide programs and resources to prevent and educate our members on sexual assault and provide support to survivors. The National Office also maintains many resources on its website including national and local resources for all chapters: https://www.alphapsilambda.net/sexual-harassment-assault

Additional resources for anyone who is experiencing or has experienced sexual violence:

National Sexual Assault Hotline
Call 1-800-656-4673
Available 24 hours everyday

National Sexual Violence Resource Center
https://www.nsvrc.org

More resource are available on our website:
https://apl.memberclicks.net/sexual-harassment-and-assault

Sexual assault can have significant and long-lasting effects on on all communities and has no place in Alpha Psi Lambda. Some of the potential effects may include:

  • Trust and cohesion: Sexual assault can significantly damage the trust and cohesion within a chapter. Survivors may struggle to trust other members, and members may struggle to trust each other, particularly if they feel that another member was responsible for the assault or failed to report it.

  • Emotional well-being: Survivors of sexual assault may experience a range of emotional responses, including anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). These can impact the member’s ability to fulfill their role within the chapter as well as the member’s academic success as a student.

  • Physical well-being: Sexual assault survivors may experience physical symptoms, such as chronic pain, fatigue, and sleep disturbances. These can impact their ability to participate in chapter activities and maintain their physical health.

  • Performance: Survivors of sexual assault may struggle to perform at their usual level, particularly if the assault occurred within a chapter environment or involved a member. They may also experience difficulties with concentration, focus, and motivation, which can impact their ability to contribute to the chapter.

  • Reputation: Sexual assault within a chapter can also damage the chapter's and overall Fraternity’s reputation and image. This can impact our ability to recruit new members, successfully program on campus, and maintain community support. At the individual level, the survivor may fear for their own reputation and how others may perceive them and treat them after the assault.

It is important for all members to understand the policies and procedures in place to prevent and respond to sexual assault. This includes participating in training to be able to utilize the reporting procedures and access support services for survivors when necessary. Chapters can also work to create a culture of respect and accountability, where sexual assault is not tolerated and survivors are supported.

The National Executive Board is fully committed to addressing sexual assault and providing support to survivors. We take this issue seriously and are actively working to ensure that our members are educated on how to prevent and respond to sexual assault. We also recognize the importance of supporting survivors and are dedicated to providing resources and assistance to help them through their healing process.
