Chicago, IL - Our Black and Latinx communities are hurting. Two young people, 13 year old Chicago Public School student Adam Toledo and 20 year old Daunte Wright, a new father, from Minnesota, recently lost their lives. These two avoidable deaths have shaken our community and country once again.

We vehemently stand in support of justice for our young people and people of color. We demand change, action, and education so that everyone is protected by the institutions of our democracy. Our BIPOC community deserves to feel safe.

In continued support of this movement, we have compiled a list of various resources from our peers, members and communities to aid in the commitment to nobility and justice.

For anyone, especially our young adult members, please consider using this resource to provide to any professor or employer. Your mental health is the most important and we all deserve to grieve these young lives lost.

Chicago, IL - Alpha Psi Lambda National, Inc. announces the appointment of Hermana Patricia Flores as the inaugural Director of Health & Wellness. Patricia joined the Fraternity at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), Beta Chapter, in Spring 2007. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology from UIUC and holds a dual Master’s Degree in Business Administration and Public Health from Benedictine University.

Patricia has a diverse background, including acting as a liaison for the International Health office at Northwestern Medicine, where she assisted international patients as a confidant, city ambassador and coordinated the overall patient experience, and advocated for diversity and inclusion within the hospital. She has assisted Professor Juliet Sorensen, founder of The Northwestern Access to Health Project at the Center for International Human Rights at Northwestern University, where she prepared educational presentations for workshops to teach community leaders and reviewed grants to increase funding for the program. This project is an interdisciplinary initiative focused on human rights, health and development in communities around the world that utilizes teams from the Northwestern Pritzker School of Law, Kellogg School of Management, and Northwestern’s Masters in Public Health program to assess and implement health and human rights projects in Ethiopia, the Dominican Republic, Mali, Nigeria, and Lebanon, among other developing nations.

Currently, Patricia works as an Analyst for Healthcare Financial Resources, Inc. performing revenue management for hospitals across the U.S. and volunteers with the Chicago Immigration Transit Assistance (CITA) program sponsored by the American Red Cross and Illinois Coalition for Immigrant & Refugee Rights. She also conducts research within the Latinx community in the Humboldt Park and Wicker Park neighborhoods of Chicago. This research is helpful for uncovering the bio-psycho-social determinants of health for the Latinx community. These insights are being measured to create a bilingual health coaching program to address many of the chronic conditions seen in the Latinx population.

The Director of Health & Wellness is the foundation of Alpha Psi Lambda’s contributions to the well-being of our membership and the greater community. Alpha Psi Lambda National, Inc. is committed to providing a positive experience for the membership and community.

Alpha Psi Lambda National, Inc. is committed to ensuring the health and wellbeing of every member and associate member of our organization.

Statement on Recent Acts of Domestic Terrorism

Chicago, IL In the past 24 hours, we have taken time to digest the events that have happened at the nation’s Capitol. Many of us are feeling mixed emotions of anger, frustration, sadness, and fear.  This, compounded by the difficulties over the past year brought on by the pandemic, continued injustices to our communities, and experiences of personal loss make it even more horrifying.

We would be remiss not to acknowledge the continued double standards and lack of accountability regarding white supremacy and acts of domestic terrorism. We need to lean on each other in times like these. We implore you to take care of your personal well-being. Consider taking social media breaks as reading and watching non-stop media coverage can be overwhelming. We urge you to talk with each other, your peers, your families, or your mentors about your emotions and thoughts as you process recent events. Please know that you may seek help and care from the members of the National Executive Board as well.

You may also find resources available on the National website that may be helpful: https://www.alphapsilambda.net/mental-health-and-wellness

We encourage those of you who wish to become more involved in efforts for accountability and systemic change, seek out reliable information, organizations, and activities to take positive and safe action. Reach out to your state and local representatives to voice concerns and demand actions.

As we continue to navigate these unprecedented and challenging times, we ask that our membership support and take care of one another and to have hope because “Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness.” (Desmond Tutu)
